Poppy Walshaw (Violoncello)
Poppy Walshaw was a Continuo Scholar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied with Alison McGillivray and Louise Hopkins. She read Music and Natural Sciences at Cambridge University then studied cello with Alexander Baillie at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, gaining her postgraduate diploma with the highest possible mark.
She has worked with The English Concert, English Baroque Soloists, Al Ayre Español, Gabrieli Consort and Players, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. With the Academy of Ancient Music she recently toured to China, Korea, Paris, and Australia, and also was continuo cellist of the second orchestra for the St Matthew Passion in Spain. As a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, she has performed under conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Charles Mackerras and William Christie.
Poppy has played continuo cello for Arte dei Suonatori (Poland), Early Opera Company, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Classical Opera Company and European Union Baroque Orchestra 2008. She was continuo cellist for St James’ Baroque Players for many high-profile events in Westminster Abbey (such as the Handel and Purcell anniversaries), broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and across Europe.
As a concerto soloist, Poppy has performed Vivaldi with Fiori Musicali, the International Baroque Players, and with La Serenissima at the Spitalfields, Canterbury and Beverley festivals (also recorded for Radio 3). CD recordings include with Collegium Musicum 90, The English Concert, Arte dei Suonatori, Early Opera Company, and Gabrieli Consort and Players, as well as with the Europäische Barockorchester Le Chardon. She was the cello coach for historical performance practice, representing the Gabrielis, for an extensive education project with the Chetham's School of Music Symphony Orchestra.
