Markus Brutscher (Tenor)
was born in Landsberg in Bavaria and was brought up in Augsburg. He received an early music training when he sung with the boys choir at the Augsburg Cathedral and the Regensburg Cathedral. Later he studied with Norma Sharp at the Berlin Hans Eisler Hochschule für Musik, then in London with Rudolph Piernay and finally in Maastricht where he studied the voice with Mya Besselink.
Already during his studies Markus Brutscher was being counted as the most asked about tenor in the country. He has also performed at all the major music capitals in the whole of Europe, the United States of America and Asia. He is a permanent guest at festivals which boast international acclaim, including Berlin, Leipzig, Halle, Ansbach, Salzburg, Boston, Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Japan and Israel. Recently Markus Brutscher has guest performed with the Vienna Academy at the Osterklang-Festival in Vienna as well as at the event of the European Capital of Culture in the city of Salamanca, he has also performed with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra in the the Kölner Philharmonie and in the Theatre des Champs Elysees in Paris.
Markus Brutscher continuously works together with leading orchestras in Europe and America as well as with leading conductors such as Andrew Parrot, Frieder Bernius, Robert King, Peter Neumann, René Jacobs, Michael Schneider, Gary Bertini, Hermann Max, Helmuth Rilling, Martin Haselböck, Helmut Müller-Brühl and others. Even though Markus Brutscher is known as a specialist in old music he also manages to combine all types and styles from early Baroque to contemporary musical pieces into his repertoire, as well as developing more and more his operatic repertoire.
in the last years he has sung in operatic productions under the direction of Christoph Spering, Wolfgang Katschner and Michael Schneider in the Schlosstheater Sanssouci, in the Hans-Otto-Theater Potsdam as well as appearing in various festivals. His last guest performance was in the role of Adastro in Traettas "Antigona", under the direction of Paul Dombrecht in Bruges, Antwerp, Salamanca and Brussels. The concert season of 2002/2003 was crowned a great success when Markus Brutscher guest-starred as Alessandro in Mozarts "Il re pastore" with the Ensemble Transparant in Antwerp and Brussels as well as also being cast as Kreonte in Traettas "Antigona" at the Stadttheater Gießen. In September 2003 Markus Brutscher was Monostatos in Mozarts "The Magic Flute" conducted by Marc Minkowski in the spectacular stage performance of "La Fura dels Baus" which was shown at the RuhrTriennale. For the 2003/2004 concert season his program included a performance as Eisenstein in Johann Strauß´ "Die Fledermaus" at the Stadttheater Gießen as well as the part of Kudrias in Janaceks "Katja Kabanova" at the Stadttheater Bielefeld.
In 2005 Markus Brutscher will perform at the Teatro Real in Madrid as Monostatos in Mozart´s "The Magic Flute", in Stuttgart at the "Staatsoper", as Monostatos again, and in Japan with several performances of Messiah with the Tokyo Symphonie Orchestra.
The musical press are unanimous in their praise for Markus Brutscher´s musical ability, the remarkable timbre of his voice as well as his vocal techniques and overwhelming stylistic sovereignty in all languages. He has also found international acknowledgement for his high level of commitment to contemporary music. More than 50 recordings with Sony Classic, EMI, Capriccio and Thorofon show the versatility of Markus Brutscher as a singer.
Besides his career as singer Markus Brutscher is composing a symphonical mass.
