Programme

Handel wrote »Messiah« in 1741 in just 22 days; the oratorio was first performed on 13 April 1742 in Dublin under the composer's own direction. It falls into three parts: the first announces the Messiah and tells of his birth, the second of the Passion and Resurrection, the third of the Last Judgement and of redemption. The text is drawn entirely from the Old and New Testament and contains no free poetry. Because Handel set the English words, the work is sung in its original language; a German translation is printed in the programme. It is performed on period instruments and modern copies in historically informed practice.

Programme

Stölzel's Christmas Oratorio ranks among the key works of one of the great composers of the 18th century; part of it is heard this evening. Many of his compositions were long considered lost and have only recently been rediscovered. Alongside it, Giovanni Alberto Ristori's festive »Messa per il Santissimo Natale« (1744): working at the Dresden court, Ristori combined his operatic experience and a first-rate orchestra into extraordinary instrumental effects and vivid contrasts in the vocal writing. Both works are performed in historically informed practice on period instruments.
